Responsible travel tips.

Environment.

Take only pictures, leave beautiful places as you find them.

Litter - Place any litter you may have in provided bins. If not possible put your litter in a pocket or bag if you have one and take it back with you to your home, hotel, B&B etc to be disposed off properly.

Recycle, reuse, reduce - Make use of local recycling facilities for your waste, if available, when travelling as well as at home.

Gardening - Before planning your trip, think how you may help the envirnoment in your local area. Start with your own garden if you have one. If you have space, have a wild area. Sow a wildflower meadow full of species native to your local habitat. Plant native trees which grow locally. Trees lock up carbon as they grow removing it from the atmosphere and 'clean' the air. They provide oxygen for us to breath, prevent soil erosion and absorb water ( useful in areas prone to flooding). Species such as Oaks also support huge ammounts of insect and bird life.

Transport.

Methods - Think about how you are going to get there. For short distances cycle or walk. This will cut down on carbon emissions and make you healthier. Travel by public transport, if available. Make use of bus and rail services. Some countries provied rental bicycles in the street. Make use of this service rather than taking a taxi or using your own or a hire car.

Respect.

Laws and customs - Research local laws and customs before you travel. Remember that each country or area of the world will do things in their own way and this may not be the way you are used to. A little research can save a lot of trouble when you get there!

Religion - Even if you are not religeous yourself it is only sensible to respect other peoples beliefs and faiths. When visiting religeous sites such as temples, churches and mosques, find out about any customs prior to entering. Some places may require you to remove your shoes or hats for instance. Remember not to use flash when taking photographs unless you are specifically allowed to do so.

Rural - When in rural areas remember to close gates etc. as applicable. People live from the land and provide most of the food you eat. Follow any instructions posted regarding accesing someone elses farm land. Stay on footpaths where possible to avoid erosion of the landscape.
