Madrid - Madrid - Spain.
Madrid is the captial city of Spain. Archeological remains suggest that the area has been a human settlement for over 300,000 years.
The arabs founded the city and called it 'Macher - it', meaning 'plentiful water', a reference to the abundance of water in the area. Later the city was taken by the Christians and the name became 'Magerit' which in turn evolved to 'Madrit' and finally, Madrid.
One of the most important places in Madrid is 'La Plaza Mayor'. It contains an equestrian statue, representing Phillipe III who had the square enlarged. Originally, the horse had an open mouth but this was sealed to prevent birds getting inside and being trapped. .
