Firenze in Tuscany, Italy is considered to be the city of Renaissance and is the capital city of the Italian region of Tuscany.
Florence was originaly a settlement established by Julius Caesar in 59 BC for his veteran soldiers. It was named Florentia (Flourishing) and built in Roman military style with the main streets, the cardo and the decumanus, crossing at the present Piazza della Repubblica. Later, the city was the centre of medieval finance and european trade.
For some time Firenze (Florence) was ruled by the Medici family. The death of the last of the Medici saw the accession, in 1737, of Francis Stephen, duke of Lorraine and husband of Maria Theresa of Austria. This led to Tuscany's temporary inclusion in the territories of the Austrian crown. In 1861 Firenze then bacame a province of a united Italy. The city is of great historical interest and renowned for its renaissance art.
